UNIVERSAL GYM EQUIPMENT HISTORY |
|
In 1957, the original Universal Gym Company ushered in the modern era of physical fitness by developing the first multi-station selectable weight-training machine. Up until that time, the primary apparatus for physical conditioning were barbells and dumbbells. Recognizing the need for a safer, more compact weight lifting machine that would work every muscle in the human body, the first Universal Gym was developed. This revolutionary training machine featured several exercise stations with separate stacks of flat weight plates that moved up and down on solid steel runner guides. A unique selectable weight key system allowed users to easily change the amount of resistance. The multi-station machine was just one of the many “firsts” that Universal brought to the fitness industry. For example, universal became the first fitness equipment manufacturer to use computers to analyze the complex mechanical forces involved in the body movement and athletic performance. This research led to the development of Universal’s patented Dynamic Variable Resistance (DVR). DVR consistently varies resistance to match the natural bio-mechanical advantages and disadvantages of the human body. Capitalizing on its experience with DVR multi-station machines, Universal developed a full line of bio-mechanically correct DVR single station machines. Universal also introduced the Universal Aerobic Super Circuit TM, a fast and effective workout that increases muscular strength, flexibility and cardio-respiratory endurance. The Universal Aerobic Super Circuit combines circuit weight training and cardio exercise to provide total body conditioning. The program also solved the problem of overcrowding as it moves users from station to station quickly and efficiently. As the age of computerization dawned, Universal began incorporating computer technology into fitness equipment. The company developed a complete line of high-tech computerized cardio exercise machines including treadmills, upright and recumbent exercise bicycles, a rowing machine, and stair climber. Special easy-to-read LED monitors on each of these machines provided users with coaching prompts and continuous progress feedback, as well as a selection of exercise modes. Throughout the company’s history, Universal has always kept a finger on the pulse of the industry in order to respond to the changing demands and desires of its equipment users as well as purchasers. In the 1970’s when health clubs (as we know them today) first came into vogue, Universal introduced its single station weight machines. In the 1980’s when the general population began concerning themselves with cardiac wellness, Universal introduced a complete line of cardio fitness products.
In four and a half decades, Universal had grown from a small California company to one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fitness equipment. Universal products have been used by health clubs, YMCA’s, YWCA’s, YWHA’s and YMHA’s, high schools, colleges, hotels and resorts, hospitals, sports medicine clinics, multi-housing complexes, retirement communities, fire departments, police departments, recreation departments, official Olympics training facilities, professional sports teams, government and military installations, and employee fitness centers throughout the world. In keeping with our commitment to producing the highest quality equipment, Universal now offers a new line of Power Pak gyms for home and commercial use. THE TRADITION CONTINUES!
